Aespa (에스파; also stylized as æspa) is a Kpop girl group consisting of four members, under SM Entertainment. They debuted on November 17, 2020, with the digital single "Black Mamba".
The origin of the name Aespa is intriguing. It is a combination of "æ", which means 'Avatar X Experience', and "aspect", which means double-sided. Together the group tries to convey a message that you would be able to experience a new world through another avatar of yourself.
Black Mamba
On October 26, 2020, a premier video was released on Aespa's social media account, revealing their name and logo. Later that day, SM Entertainment also announced that they will introduce a new girl group in November.
On November 2, "Black Mamba" took the industry by storm. The music video collected 21,4225,062 views on the first day, breaking the record for most-viewed music videos in the first 24 hours.
On November 17, on their debut day, the group's fan club name was announced to be "MY (마이)" which is the word used to mean "the most precious friend" in KWANGYA where Aespa's avatar æ lives.
The music video for "Black Mamba" hit 100 million views, which took only 51 days and 12 hours to achieve, setting the new record in K-pop history to garner 100 million views in the shortest period of time.
Forever
On January 29, 2021, the hashtag #늘_네_옆에_난_서있을게 (#I_will_always_stand_by_your_side) was tweeted by the group's official Twitter account, and it was later revealed that the group would release a surprise single "Forever" on February 5.
Next Level
On May 4 of this year, SM Entertainment confirmed that Aespa is preparing for a May comeback. The exact dates will be released once finalized.
On May 6, a teaser was posted via the group's social media announcing the group's comeback entitled "Next Level". It was confirmed that Aespa would be coming back with their third digital single titled "Next Level" on May 17.
On May 17, it was revealed during the press conference for "Next Level" that the group planned to release their first full-length album soon.
Savage
On September 14, the first teaser for the group's second album with Savage was revealed. Later that same day, SM Entertainment revealed the album, Savage, and it is the group's first mini-album which would be released on October 5, with six songs of various genres including the title track of the same name.
On October 5, the very first day of the release, it has already reached the milestone of 400,000 copies sold during its pre-order. The title song "Savage" reached the top of all major Korean digital charts.
Billboard, then, announced Savage was ranked 20th on the US Billboard 200 album chart, the highest-ranking ever achieved by a K-pop girl group.
Dreams come true
On November 4, it was announced that the group would participate in SM’s remastering project and release their own version of S.E.S.’s "Dreams Come True" before the end of 2021.
On December 12, exciting news of a video of Aespa would be released in partnership with YouTube Originals, showing the re-creation of the song with the participation of the singer BoA (producer, choreographer, and art director from the single and Bada from S.E.S.) on December 23.
Karina
She was born in Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. She trained with SM Entertainment for 4 years before joining Aespa. Her nickname is Karomi and she’s the tallest member.
In 2020, she appeared with Kai from EXO in the collaboration of the virtual showcase between Hyundai Motor Company and SM Entertainment.
Giselle
She was born in Garosu-gil, Seoul, South Korea.
Her nickname is Riri and she also has a japanese name, Eri.
Only been trained for 11 months (talented!), she speaks English, Korean and Japanese and she can play the guitar.
Winter
She was born in Busan, South Korea. Her nickname is Baby rabbit. She trained for 4 years.
Initially, she intended to become an actress, but she liked to sing and dance so much that somewhere along the way during her training, she switched to become a Kpop music idol.
Ningning
She was born in Harbin, China. Her specialty is singing and she loves cooking.
She can speak both Chinese and Korean fluently.
When she was young, her goal was to become a painter. However, an unexpected occasion of participating in“Let’s Sing Kids” in China changed her life forever.
Later she appeared on a Chinese contest program “Music Honors Student ”, and also in MBC's “Shining Star”, which aired from October 16, 2017
Then she became an SM trainee in 2016 and was selected to be a part of SM Rookies in the same year. She was introduced as an SM Rookie on September 19, 2016.
